Welcome to Cub Scouting at 1st West Waverley. The following information will answer many of your questions, so, Welcome!
Within the pack, the Cubs are divided into smaller groups called sixes (ideally with six cubs in each). Each six has a cub in charge called a
“sixer” and an assistant called a second. These positions are usually filled by the older and/or more experienced Cubs and have some
responsibilities associated with them. Such responsibilities would include preparing the flag, folding the flag handling our notices and
looking after new cubs to name a few. Sixers wear a yellow horizontal stripe with either sixer or second on them. They wear this on their
uniform. All cubs wear a colour patch on their left sleeve. 1st West has four sixes: Tawny, Brown, Grey and Black. All cubs should bring 2
handcherchiefs, 50c , their test book , uniform and scarf neat and tidy and a smile every week for inspection.
Uniform:
Linking Joeys will already have a group scarf, but as you progress through each section a change of shirt is required. The colour for all
shirts is green, but a stripe of the section colour is the shoulders. The section colour for Cubs is yellow/gold. New chums will have been
wearing casual clothes plus the white scarf. On the night of their investiture, the linking Joy will wear his new shirt with the scarf and reaffirm
the promise made in Joeys. New chums wear the new shirt with the white scarf. They are invested into the assocaition and the group. The
new uniform allows cubs to wear casual pants instead of uniform pants (there are however dress pants if you want to buy them).
You need
Cub scout shirt (either woven or knit)
Cub Scout peaked hat.
Optional pants/ windcheater
Scarf (provided by the group at investiture)

Investiture:
You will be invested into the Cub Pack after six – eight weeks. This will be the first night you wear the Cub uniform (with your white scarf if
you are a new chum). This is a very important night for new cub scouts and you may wish to invite grandparents, brother and sisters as well
as parents. We encourage you, the Cub Scout to decide whom you would like to invite and family are encouraged to take photographs.
Leaders:
Voluntary leaders who undergo training with the Scout Association run a Cub Pack. Firstly each leader undergoes a police clearance
followed by an introduction to scouting seminar, a skills day then an inservice training with another pack for a number of weeks. At the end
of this leader attend a Basic Cub Scout Leaders Course over two weekends. All cub leaders have completed this course. Some leaders
take on further training coursed such as First aid, Camping under canvas, Advanced training.
Cub Scout Leaders take their names from the Jungle book by Rudyard Kipling. The leader in charge of the pack is called the Cub Scout
Leader (CSL) and is called Akela. The other leaders are called Assistant Cub Scout Leaders (ACSL).
The leaders at 1st West Waverley currently are:
CSL Fiona Rudd Akela
The phone number at the hall is 9807 0706
Subs:
We ask that Cubs pay $10 each at the beginning of each term to cover costs associated with weekly meeting such as paper, glue scissors
and other material. Subs should be placed in a named envelope and handed to a leader at the beginning of each term.
The Award Scheme:
This is mentioned comprehensively in the booklet. The yellow passbook given on investiture will assist the new cub and parents to work
through what is needed to pass tests. Cubs and parents are asked not to sign the yellow passbook, but to let a leader know of any tasks
completed at home by sending a note. Nearly all programs reflect badge work so generally a cub will have done enough preparation in
instruction time to pass a boomerang badge test. Cubs need to at the beginning of the cub night write their name in the test passing book
in the hall and a leader will endeavour to pass them on the work. Other Badges are Achievement badges which are interest based and can
also be done in the cub’s own time as well as passed at Cub nights.

Any extra curricular activities or activities away form the hall will usually involve permission forms being returned to the leaders. The notice
